The Status of Riparian Habitats in Pacific Northwest Forests"
نویسنده
چکیده
It has been conservatively estimated that there are 74,356 kIn of running waters in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, Idaho) that can C'r do support fisheries (Brin son et aI. 1981). On public lands in Oregon, the Bureau of Land Management (1980) es timates that 71,135 ha are dominated by riparian communities. These ecosystems are among the most productive wildlife habitats in North America and the majority of wildlife species in the Northwest will utilize these during all or part of their life cycles (Thomas et al. 1979, Oakley et al. 1985). Optimally, riparian ecosystems are charac terized by high degrees of species, structural, and spatial diversity. Critical ecological, physical, and biological linkages between riparian, aquatic, and upland ecosystems are intact.

Biodiversity management approaches for stream–riparian areas: Perspectives for Pacific Northwest headwater forests, microclimates, and amphibians
Stream–riparian areas represent a nexus of biodiversity, with disproportionate numbers of species tied to and interacting within this key habitat. New research in Pacific Northwest headwater forests, especially the characterization of microclimates and amphibian distributions, is expanding our perspective of riparian zones, and suggests the need for alternative designs to manage stream–riparian...

One of the least understood aspects of aquatic ecology is the role of riparian zones of lakes, and how these habitats and their functions are impacted by human development of lakeshores. We investigated the effects of residential lakeshore development on littoral coarse woody debris (CWD) distribution and on riparian forest characteristics by comparing 18 lakes in the U.S. Pacific Northwest wit...
متن کاملStructural dynamics of riparian forests along a black cottonwood successional gradient
Black cottonwood Populus balsamifera L. subsp. trichocarpa (Brayshaw) dominated riparian forests are important habitats for organisms in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest. Using a chronosequence approach and fixed area plots, successional processes were quantified in 28 stands along 145 km of the Willamette River in Western Oregon. Cluster analysis yielded five su...
متن کاملThe Northwest Forest Plan: origins, components, implementation experience, and suggestions for change.
In the 1990s the federal forests in the Pacific Northwest underwent the largest shift in management focus since their creation, from providing a sustained yield of timber to conserving biodiversity, with an emphasis on endangered species. Triggered by a legal challenge to the federal protection strategy for the Northern Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis caurina), this shift was facilitated by a s...

The study identified seasonal habitat use by endangered adult Sakhalin taimen Hucho perryi and the environmental characteristics of their habitat (water depth, amount of riparian forest and sinuosity). Fifteen adult H. perryi with acoustic tags were tracked by towing an acoustic receiver with a canoe in the Bekanbeushi River system in eastern Hokkaido Island, Japan, during each month from late ...
